POST MATCH RECOVERY

The final whistle isn’t the end of the game. It’s the start of your preparation for the next one.

A full 90 minutes leaves your muscles damaged, your energy stores empty and your body short on fluid. How you recover over the next 48 hours decides how you feel at training and how you perform in your next match.

For footballers, good recovery means:

  • Less soreness
  • Energy back sooner
  • Better training quality during the week
  • Lower injury risk
The First Hour

This is where recovery starts.

  • Rehydrate – start drinking straight away and keep going over the next few hours. Adding electrolytes helps replace the sodium you lost through sweat.
  • Refuel – have carbs and protein within an hour (a recovery shake, chicken wrap, rice and meat, or chocolate milk all work)
  • Cool down – 5–10 minutes of light movement and stretching rather than sitting straight down
The Evening After

Eat a proper meal with a good portion of carbs, protein and vegetables. Pasta, rice or potatoes with chicken, fish or meat is ideal.

Avoid alcohol. It slows rehydration, disrupts sleep and gets in the way of muscle repair.

Get to bed. Sleep is the most important recovery tool you have. Aim for 8–9 hours and keep screens away before bed, especially after an evening kick-off when you’ll feel wired.

The Day After

Don’t just sit on the sofa. Light movement helps reduce stiffness and soreness:

  • A walk, easy bike or swim for 20–30 minutes
  • Mobility work and foam rolling
  • Keep drinking fluids steadily through the day

Keep your protein intake spread across the day to support muscle repair.

Day Two

By 48 hours most players are ready to train again at a moderate level. Listen to your body, if a muscle still feels tight or sore in one specific spot, get it looked at rather than training through it.

Does Recovery Really Make a Difference?

Yes. Especially when you play more than once a week.

Players who recover properly train at a higher level during the week, and that adds up across a season. Players who don’t start every game slightly behind.

Final Thoughts

Recovery is where the work you put in actually turns into performance.

Rehydrate, refuel, sleep and keep moving. Get those basics right for 48 hours after every game and you’ll feel the difference by the next kick-off.

Train hard, fuel properly and recover like it matters, because it does.
